Episode Eighteen: Veena Sood

Episode Eighteen: Veena Sood

Veena Sood comes from a culture where girls are often raised to smile and keep quiet. But Veena has a big voice, and she chooses to use it to teach, to perform, and to inspire, both as an improviser and as an in-demand actress. Over the course of her illustrious career, Veena has played comedic and dramatic roles in feature films like The Accused, Anne Wheeler’s Loyalties, and Welcome to Marwen, television shows like Ghost WarsThe Indian Detective, and Corner Gas Animated, and web series like Yoga Town. In recent years, Veena has been recognized for her craft by her community: with UBCP/ACTRA’s Sam Payne Award in 2014, the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award in 2017, and a 2018 Leo Award nomination for Best Performance in a Music, Comedy, or Variety Program or Series for playing the principal of a school that’s hired a robot to teach a kindergarten class in Android Employed. In this poignant and often hilarious episode of the YVR Screen Scene Podcast, Veena reflects on her childhood as a brown girl with a big voice, talks about how things have changed for South Asian actors since she entered the biz, and explains why she really, really wants to play a cowgirl.
