Nominees announced for 2018 Leo Awards

Will vampires rule the 2018 Leo Awards?

Nominees for the Leo Awards – which recognize on-screen and behind-the-camera excellence in the British Columbia film and television sphere and are handed out over several splashy ceremonies each May and June – were posted overnight to the Leo Awards web site.

Van Helsing – Syfy’s post-apocalyptic series about the badass descendant of the famed vampire hunter, and the humans and former humans around her who do whatever they need to do to survive – leads with 13 nominations, including three for Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series (for Christopher Heyerdahl, Jonathan Scarfe, and Aleks Paunovic).

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and Ghost Wars follow up with seven nominations each (including Guest Performance nominations for Lee Majdoub and Agam Darshi for the former, and a Best Lead Performance nomination for Luvia Petersen for the latter).

In the Motion Picture category, Dead Shack  – a cabin-in-the-woods horror film from Peter Ricq (Freaktown) – is the top contender with 12 nominations, followed closely by homeschooling-gone-sideways comedy Adventures in Public School with 10, and critically acclaimed drama Drone with seven, including Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Motion Picture for Patrick Sabongui.

Other nominations of note: Actor Ryan Robbins has nominations in three categories: Best Performance by a Male in a Short Drama for Yellow; Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Television Movie for Undercover Wife; and Best Lead Performance by a Male in a Dramatic Series for Pure. Director Allan Harmon was nominated three times in the Best Direction of a Television Movie category (for A Joyous Christmas, Christmas Princess, and The Christmas Calendar).

Camille Sullivan is nominated for a Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series Leo Award for The Disappearance.

Other highlights: Richard Harmon is nominated for Best Supporting Actor by a Male in a Dramatic Series for The 100, and as a producer for Best Television Movie for The Christmas Calendar. Camille Sullivan is nominated for Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series for The Disappearance. Ali Liebert is nominated for Best Lead Performance by a Female in a Television Movie for A Gift to Remember. Jennifer Spence is nominated for Best Supporting Performance by a Female in a Dramatic Series for Travelers.

Besides Dramatic Series and Motion Picture, awards will also be handed out in the categories of Short Drama, Documentary Program or Series, Information, Lifestyle or Reality Program or Series, Music, Comedy or Variety Program or Series, Animation Program or Series, Youth or Children's Program or Series, Web Series, Music Video, and Student Production.

The 2018 Leo Awards will be handed out on May 26, June 2, and June 3. The awards aren’t broadcast or live-streamed, but YVR Screen Scene will be present for all three ceremonies.
